En uno de nuestros proyectos desarrollamos una aplicación Android que sincroniza su información con una aplicación web programada con C# sobre .NET. La aplicación web, además de recibir, grabar y enviar los datos actualizados, se encarga de comparar la versión del software de Android (la cual éste le envía en la llamada REST) con la del APK alojado en el servidor para que, en caso de diferir, «avisarle» al programa del celular y que éste consulte al usuario si quiere descargar el software más reciente y actualizarlo. Para automatizar este proceso es necesario que nuestro programa en C# pueda leer la versión del paquete APK, de esta manera bartará sólo con copiar este archivo al servidor para que les avise a los usuarios en sus celulares, en la próxima sincronización de información, si quieren actualizar su software.
Ahora bien, abrir un APK no es problema ya que simplemente es un archivo ZIP, el problema es que el archivo «AndroidManifest.xml» (que tiene toda la información de la aplicacion) no es un archivo de texto como cualquier otro XML, sino que está guardado en binario, por lo cual, tenemos que buscar alguna manera de leerlo. Por suerte en esta respuesta de StackOverflow, Rory creó una clase en .NET que hace esta tarea (en realidad convirtió la clase de Java que está en esta página a .NET).
Ya teniendo esto lo único que queda es leer el archivo y buscar los atributos del nodo «manifest» (el root) del nuestro XML.
A continuación les copio el código de nuestro método estático que utiliza la clase de Rory para que, pasándole el path a un archivo APK, nos devuelva el nombre del package y el nombre (string) y el valor (entero) de la versión de la aplicación contenida.
